5 Food Storage Tips and Tricks

As many people try to stay home as much as possible during these strange times we are often met with the challenge of not going to the grocery store as frequently as before, which leaves the dilemma of making food and especially produce last as long as possible.

Here are a few food storage tips and tricks to help:

  1. Utilize your freezer!

Take any fresh vegetables, clean them, and put them in freezer safe containers or bags to make them last longer. Cutting up and blending fresh fruit and putting it in an ice cube tray is a great way to make it last longer as well.

  1. Keep coffee sealed and in a dark place

Keeping coffee in the refrigerator is a great way to keep coffee fresh for longer because it is dark and moisture free.

  1. Keep produce separated

Storing certain products away from each other can help to lengthen their freshness. For example avocados, bananas, and apples emit gases that can ripen other fruits and vegetables too quickly causing them to spoil faster than usual.

  1. Dairy should be kept on the middle shelf

The middle of the fridge is not constantly exposed to outside air and doesn’t have temperature fluctuations like door shelves do. This makes it an ideal place to keep dairy products fresh for longer. If you have extra dairy products just stick it in the freezer until you are ready to use them.

  1. Use frozen bread by the slice

As bread is often one of the first items to be out of stock at the store keeping it fresh for longer is of the utmost importance. Freezing a loaf of bread immediately after purchase and taking each slice out to defrost as needed is a great way to make it last longer.
